Seanchas Ard Mhacha (ISSN: 04880196) is a journal devoted to the publication of new research on the history of the Archdiocese of Armagh. Since the first issue appeared in 1954, fifty issues of the journal have now been published and it is recieved by all members of the Society and to be found in most local studies and academic libraries on the island and abroad.
The journal has been to the forefront of the renaissance in study in local historical studies in Ireland, and has established itself as a premier journal in this field. The journal is believed to have made an outstanding contribution to the recording of the history of the Archdiocese of Armagh and to Irish historiography and culture in general.
Articles are welcomed in English and Irish, and from various disciplines (history, literature and archaeology). To date, the journal has published important articles on the early Church in Armagh, the O’Neills and O’Hanlons, placenames and personal names in the archdiocese, the Irish abroad, and the troubles of 1918-23. The Journal also features a vigorous reviews section using eminent local scholars, and a chronicle of the Society’s activities and wider news from the archdiocese.
There have been four editors of the Journal since its first appearance:
- Tomás Ó Fiaich (1954-1977)
- Patrick Campbell (1978-1985)
- Réamonn Ó Muirí (1985-2013)
